What to do after an accident

Before the repair conversation starts, a few minutes at the scene makes everything afterwards easier. Once everyone is safe and the vehicle is out of traffic:

  • Photograph the damage to your own vehicle — wide shots showing the whole vehicle, then closer shots of each damaged area.
  • Photograph the other vehicle, including its damage and its registration plate.
  • Photograph the scene itself — position of the vehicles, road markings, signage, skid marks, the direction of travel.
  • Exchange details — name, phone, address, registration and insurer.
  • Note the time, date, location and conditions while it is fresh.
  • Get details of any witnesses.

Do not drive a vehicle you are not sure is safe. Fluid on the ground, a wheel that is not sitting straight, a bonnet that will not latch, lights or steering that are affected, or anything rubbing on a tyre all mean it should be towed rather than driven.

How a collision repair runs

  • 1. Inspection and quote. We assess the visible damage and quote in writing, flagging where hidden damage is likely.
  • 2. Dismantling. Damaged panels and trim come off so the full extent can be seen. This is where hidden damage surfaces.
  • 3. Revised quote if needed. If dismantling reveals more, you get a call and approve the revision before we go on.
  • 4. Panel work. Panel beating where the panel can be brought back, replacement where it cannot.
  • 5. Parts fitted and aligned, with panel gaps set so everything sits and closes correctly.
  • 6. Preparation and priming of the repaired areas.
  • 7. Refinishing — colour matched to your vehicle's actual paint and blended into adjacent panels.
  • 8. Curing, reassembly and final inspection, then the vehicle is cleaned for handover.

How the inspection and quote works

Every job starts the same way: we look at the vehicle in person. Photos are useful for a rough idea over the phone, but panel damage hides things — a dent that looks superficial can have a cracked bracket or a distorted mounting point behind it, and a scuff can turn out to have gone through to bare metal.

  • Bring the vehicle in, or send photos first if you want an initial idea before making the trip.
  • We inspect the damage and check what is behind the visible panel — mounts, brackets, clips, adjacent panels and panel gaps.
  • We work out repair versus replace for each damaged part, and explain why.
  • You get a written quote itemising the panel work, parts, preparation and refinishing.
  • Nothing extra happens without your say-so. If hidden damage turns up once the panel is off, you get a phone call and a revised quote to approve — not a surprise on the final invoice.

On hidden damage: it is common, and any repairer who tells you a collision quote is guaranteed final before dismantling is guessing. We would rather explain that up front than have the conversation later.

How long repairs take

We give you a timeframe with your written quote, because the honest answer depends on the job. What drives it:

  • How many panels are involved, and whether any need replacing rather than repairing.
  • Parts availability — this is often the biggest variable. A common part may be on the shelf locally; something less common can mean waiting for it to come from over east.
  • How much refinishing is needed, including blending into adjacent panels.
  • Curing time, which cannot be shortened without compromising the finish.
  • Whether hidden damage is found once panels come off.

A small localised repair is a much shorter job than a multi-panel collision repair waiting on parts. Rather than quote you an average that will not apply to your car, we will tell you what your specific job needs when we quote it.

Colour matching, and why it is the hard part

Getting a repair to disappear is mostly about the paint, not the panel. Factory colours are not one fixed recipe — the same colour code can vary between production batches and between plants, and every car on the road has faded from UV exposure since it left the factory. A Perth car that has spent years parked outside has moved a long way from its original code.

So matching means working from the vehicle in front of us, not just the code on the compliance plate. That involves reading the existing paint, mixing to suit it, and spraying out a test card to check the match before anything goes near the car.

The other half is blending. On a metallic or pearl finish especially, paint is carried out into the adjacent panel and faded so there is no hard edge where new meets old. A repair that is technically the right colour but stops dead at a panel line will still be visible. That blending work is a large part of why a quality refinish takes the time it does.

Frequently asked questions

What should I photograph after a vehicle accident?

Wide shots of both vehicles showing their position, close shots of every damaged area, the other vehicle's registration plate, and the scene itself including road markings and signage. Also note the time, date, location and conditions, and get witness details if there are any.

Can I drive my car to the workshop after an accident?

Only if it is clearly safe. Fluid leaking, a wheel not sitting straight, a bonnet that will not latch, affected steering or lights, or anything rubbing a tyre all mean it should be towed. If you are unsure, call us and describe it before you drive it.

How long do accident repairs normally take?

It varies with the number of panels, whether parts need ordering, how much refinishing is involved and whether hidden damage turns up during dismantling. Parts availability is usually the biggest variable. We give you a timeframe with the written quote.

Do you repair private and insurance jobs?

We quote and carry out repairs for private customers. If you are making an insurance claim, check with your insurer about their requirements first, and speak to us about your specific situation — call 0425 559 576.

What happens if the repair costs more than first quoted?

You are called and asked to approve the revision before any additional work happens. Collision damage frequently hides behind panels, so a first quote before dismantling is an assessment of what can be seen — we will say so when we quote.
