Car Resprays in Perth

Panel, section and full vehicle resprays out of our Malaga workshop. The finish is decided almost entirely by the preparation underneath it — which is where a respray is either done properly or not.

What kind of respray do you need?

ScopeSuitsWhat to know
Single panelOne damaged or failed panelBlending into the adjacent panels is usually needed so the panel does not stand out
SectionSeveral adjoining panels, or one area of the carNatural break points are chosen so the transition is not obvious
Full respray, same colourWidespread clear coat failure or fadingThe big cost is preparation and masking, not paint
Full respray, colour changeRestoration or personal preferenceSignificantly more work — door shuts, jambs and engine bay all show the original colour unless included. Ask us what is involved before deciding.

Most people asking for a "respray" actually need a panel or section done, and that is worth establishing before you spend money. We will tell you the smallest scope that will get you the result you are after.

Preparation is the job

It is worth being blunt about this, because it is where cheap respray quotes save their money. Automotive paint is a high-gloss surface, and gloss magnifies whatever is beneath it. Every ripple, scratch, edge of old filler and patch of failing clear coat under a new topcoat will show through — often looking worse than before, because the new gloss reflects more light.

Proper preparation means the old failing finish comes back, the surface gets flattened and made consistent, and everything that should not be painted gets masked or removed. On a full respray that is the overwhelming majority of the labour. A quote that is dramatically cheaper than others is almost always cheaper here, and it shows within a year or two.

Preparation and quality control

Paint only ever looks as good as what is underneath it. High-gloss automotive finishes are unforgiving — any imperfection in the surface below shows through, and often shows up worse once the clear coat goes on and starts reflecting light.

  • Surface preparation — stripping back the damaged area, filling and shaping where required, then progressively finer sanding to a flat, even surface.
  • Masking and protection so overspray does not reach glass, trim, seals or adjacent panels.
  • Priming the prepared area so the topcoat has a consistent base to sit on.
  • Colour and clear coat, blended into the adjacent panels where the finish requires it.
  • Curing — paint needs time to harden properly, and rushing it is how a finish gets marked before the customer has even driven away.
  • Final inspection — panel gaps and alignment checked, the finish checked in good light for texture and match, and the vehicle cleaned before handover.

Colour matching, and why it is the hard part

Getting a repair to disappear is mostly about the paint, not the panel. Factory colours are not one fixed recipe — the same colour code can vary between production batches and between plants, and every car on the road has faded from UV exposure since it left the factory. A Perth car that has spent years parked outside has moved a long way from its original code.

So matching means working from the vehicle in front of us, not just the code on the compliance plate. That involves reading the existing paint, mixing to suit it, and spraying out a test card to check the match before anything goes near the car.

The other half is blending. On a metallic or pearl finish especially, paint is carried out into the adjacent panel and faded so there is no hard edge where new meets old. A repair that is technically the right colour but stops dead at a panel line will still be visible. That blending work is a large part of why a quality refinish takes the time it does.

How long repairs take

We give you a timeframe with your written quote, because the honest answer depends on the job. What drives it:

  • How many panels are involved, and whether any need replacing rather than repairing.
  • Parts availability — this is often the biggest variable. A common part may be on the shelf locally; something less common can mean waiting for it to come from over east.
  • How much refinishing is needed, including blending into adjacent panels.
  • Curing time, which cannot be shortened without compromising the finish.
  • Whether hidden damage is found once panels come off.

A small localised repair is a much shorter job than a multi-panel collision repair waiting on parts. Rather than quote you an average that will not apply to your car, we will tell you what your specific job needs when we quote it.

Perth conditions

Two things about resprays in this climate are worth knowing. First, the reason a lot of Perth cars need one is UV — sustained sun breaks down clear coat, and once it starts lifting on the roof, bonnet and boot, refinishing is the only fix. Second, a fresh finish is at its most vulnerable in its first weeks while it fully hardens, so we will tell you how to look after it when you collect the vehicle — including what to avoid washing it with and when it is safe to polish.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a car respray cost in Perth?

It depends on the scope — a single panel, a section, or the whole vehicle — and above all on the preparation the existing paint needs. A car with sound paint takes far less preparation than one with widespread clear coat failure. We inspect the vehicle and quote in writing.

Do I need a full respray or just a panel?

Most people who ask about a respray need a panel or a section rather than the whole car. It depends on how widespread the damage or clear coat failure is. We will recommend the smallest scope that gets you the result you want.

Why are some respray quotes so much cheaper?

Almost always because of preparation. Preparation is the bulk of the labour in a respray, and it is what determines whether the finish still looks good in two years. Paint sprayed over an inadequately prepared surface shows every flaw underneath it.

Can you change my car's colour?

It is possible, but it is considerably more work than a same-colour respray, because door shuts, jambs and the engine bay all show the original colour unless they are included. Talk to us about what is involved before committing to it.

How should I look after fresh paint?

New paint is at its most vulnerable in the first weeks while it hardens fully. We will give you specific guidance when you collect the vehicle, covering what to wash it with, what to avoid, and when it is safe to polish or wax.
